The state government is planning a modern township at Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), on the lines of Songdo in South Korea, to take the pressure away from Bengaluru.“We want to develop a state-of-the-art township which grows into a counter magnet to Bengaluru,“ urban development & Haj minister R Roshan Baig told ET. If the township is modern enough and has plenty of opportunities to offer, then at least a fifth of Bengaluru's population will consider shifting to the new city , he said. “Quite a few countries have built modern cities in what was once a mining area. Songdo was also a mining region,“ the minister said.Songdo international business district, about 65 km from Seoul, has been built from scratch on 1,480 acres of land.
The Union urban development department officials have responded favourably to the idea. But the state's urban development department wants to first discuss the subject with the ministry of mining as the 12,000-acre land identified for the proj .. “There are already a few mature industrial suburbs in the vicinity of KGF,“ Baig said. The 700-acre Narasapura industrial suburb is home to industries such as Honda, Scania, Mahindra Aerospace, and BEML. The place has both automobile and other manufacturing industries. “The place has the potential to grow as an economic hub. It will not only ease the pressure off Bengaluru, but will also emerge as an alternative investment destination,“ Baig said.
The Centre has now initiated action to conduct exploration of the dumps for the reassessment of gold available. “The biggest area of concern for the government is environmental degradation from closed mines as well as encroachments,“ he said.

Wistron to invest 3,000 cr in Kolar iPhone plant Apple Inc’s Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron Corp, on Tuesday, said it would invest close to Rs 3,000 crore in two phases to set up a greenfield smartphone manufacturing plant in Karnataka. A high-level team of officials from Wistron Technologies led by its Chief of Staff Frank Lin and accompanied by A Gururaj, managing director, Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd, met Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in this regard. The proposed manufacturing plant will generate around 10,000 jobs after the completion of Phase 2, official sources said. Wistron has already acquired 43 acres of land at Narasapura industrial area, about 65 km from Bengaluru, in Kolar district. The company will commence civil work on August 15. During the first phase of its investment, Wistron will invest Rs 650 crore and employ 2,500 persons. It will manufacture selected models of iPhone
